02/03/22: 2021’s top leagues; CS:GO gets Major; Dignitas goes Pro for Rocket League

Medias First Morning Read Thursday February 3, 2022 Good morning! It’s Thursday and this is your early morning Esports brief. Who were the top leagues and circuits in 2021? Esports Charts revealed it viewership statistics for the period, leveraging numbers from the regular seasons of each respective league worldwide (not including China). With a commanding presence atop the charts, the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League led the way, laying claim to 202 million hours watched, and a rise of 112% over 2020 numbers. Sitting a number two was Riot’s LCK, the Korean League of Legends out, which delivered 135.24 million hours watched. Rounding out the top ten were: the PUBG Mobile Pro League; the Dota 2 Pro Circuit; the LEC; Valorant Champions Tour; ESL Pro League; Blast Premier; the LCS; and the Rocket League Championship Series. COMPETITION CS:GO competition will see Belgium host the first Major of the year, in the PGL CS:GO Major Antwerp 2022. The main event will take place inside Antwerps Sportpaleis, between May 19-22. “Belgium was our first option for the Major because it is situated in the heart of Europe,” said Silviu Stroje, CEO of PGL. “The location is accessible for everyone, and Sportpaleis is only 30 minutes away from the Brussels airport. We know that CS:GO has a lot of fans in Europe, and our goal was to find one of the most approachable destinations.”

Capcom at last lined up plans for the Capcom Pro Tour 2021 Season Final, a four-day online event running Feb. 17-20. While the initial Pro Tour Finals had to be scrapped as a result of the pandemic, the new alternative will now see a slate of exhibitions, with 40 players set to square off in best-of-9 showcase-style match.

NACON and its development studio KT Racing, in collaboration with WRC Promoter, unveiled plans for the 2022 eSports WRC Championship season, run on WRC 10. The 13-stop calendar starts in Monte-Carlo from February 4-7 before wrapping up in Greece from Aug. 12-15 and will include five new stops to the 2022 calendar: Spain, Belgium, Croatia, Estonia and Greece. Top eight drivers from the regular season will automatically earn a spot in the World Finals.

Electronic Arts and the NFL announced the return of the NFL Pro Bowl: Madden NFL 22 Edition for the 2022 Pro Bowl, taking place Sunday, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Chargers Derwin James and Browns Nick Chubb will compete head-to-head against Cowboys Micah Parsons and Vikings Justin Jefferson in a new 2022 Pro Bowl experience coming to Madden NFL 22’s Superstar KO multiplayer mode this week. Returning host Charissa Thompson will be joined by co-host Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson and winner of last year’s virtual Pro Bowl, Marshawn Lynch to call the matchup on Feb. 5 at 6p on the NFL YouTube, Twitter and Facebook, EA Madden NFL Twitch and on the iHeartRadio App.

KRAFTON and PUBG Esports mapped out plans for the 2022 PUBG: Battlegrounds competitive ecosystem and will offer more than $740,000 in prize pools across four events. The slate includes the two more outings for the PUBG Continental Series as well as two ESL PUBG Masters events. PCS 6 will take place in April, with PCS 7 scheduled for September. Meanwhile, the PUBG Nations Cup returns in June.

Activision Blizzard will reportedly hand operations of the Overwatch League to a third party, per SBJ. Season five is projected to launch in April, and the move would echo its earlier decision to hand over operations of the Call of Duty League to Esports Engine.

Motorsport Games and INDYCAR announced that the INDYCAR-Motorsport Games Pro Challenge will take place Feb. 9, with the first official esports event between the two parties that will involve a slate of NTT INDYCAR SERIES stars, including reigning champion Alex Palou of Chip Ganassi Racing, four-time Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge winner Helio Castroneves of Meyer Shank Racing, two-time series champion Josef Newgarden of Team Penske and more. Action will begin at 6:30p on the INDYCAR YouTube Channel. STREAMHATCHET Bungie, the creator of the Destiny franchise, was recently purchased by Sony Interactive Entertainment, with the stipulation that Bungie will remain independent and games will continue to be multi-platform. So what benefits will Bungie and the Destiny franchise bring to Sony?
Sony most likely sees the benefit of a live service game like Destiny that keeps players coming back for paid downloadable content. Instead of relying on completely new game releases and marketing new games to players, Bungie utilizes their already existing fanbase and offers new storylines within the same game, most likely a selling point for Sony.
From Stream Hatchet’s data, visible upticks in live streaming hours watched of Destiny 2 correspond with the release dates of their DLC. After the release of Forsaken in Year 2, Destiny started referring to new DLC as “seasons,” releasing content on a quarterly basis. Each yearly release gets the highest hours watched, peaking at 21 million hours for the release of Forsaken in 2018. Since Bungie’s split with Activision in early 2019 and their change to seasonal DLC releases, Destiny 2’s relevance on live streaming platforms has maintained consistency and seemed to have even increased average hours watched. While the peaks might not reach as high as they did on release day and in year 2, the game has amassed a more consistent watch time in recent years.
From the data, we can see that Destiny’s fanbase is a loyal one, coming back season after season to watch live streaming content of the new DLC from their favorite streamers.

Red Bull signed on once again to join the VALORANT Champions Tour EMEA as an official partner and will present the Clutch Moment for each match throughout the VCT EMEA 2022 season. GameSquare Esports, owners of Complexity Gaming, forged a deal with NFT platform Arterra and will collaborate with the company on the platform’s official launch. With the deal, ARterra becomes the official NFT marketplace of Complexity Gaming as well as the organisation’s exclusive NFT platform.

BLAST Premier announced a two-year partnership extension with premium audio peripherals provider, EPOS. EPOS became BLAST’s official audio partner in February 2020 and the extended deal will see the continuation of the ‘Push to Talk’ podcast series into a second season.


Coaching platform Metafy raised $25 million in an opening round of funding, led by Tiger Global Management and Seven Seven Six ventures. After the funding was secured, Metafy announced plans to dedicate $1 million of the funds raised to help the esports community by funding a slate of local and online tournaments, while the majority of the fund will be used to boost esports and gaming coaching offerings.

Midnite, a esports betting platform, announced the first closing of its $16mm Series A funding round led by The Raine Group. As part of the round, existing investors increased their investment in Midnite. Notable previous backers of Midnite include Makers Fund and Venrex. Proceeds from this round will be used to help fund Midnite’s growth initiatives. TEAMS NRG Esports, Levi’s, and Ader Agency launched the NRG Winter Games in Fortnite Creative, running through Feb. 12. The event will see the NRG Content Castle brought to life within Fortnite. Fans will have the chance to interact with Levi’s® 501® Jeans imagery in a showcase of the potential of the metaverse, “bringing a physical location to players who would otherwise never get to experience it.” The NRG Winter Games will feature three distinct competitions: The Build/Edit Course, The Aim Course, and a speed run.

Dignitas announced the signing of Boston Scott, the NFL running back who is also a Rocket League competitive player. Scott maintains “Grand Champion” status in Rocket League, which places him in the Top .52% of over 6 million competitive players globally. He has signed with Dignitas’ two-time World Championship-winning Rocket League Team as the 4th member and substitute for the professional team, led by Jack “ApparentlyJack” Benton, Joris “Joreuz” Robben and Kyle “Scrub Killa” Robertson.

Tim “TimTheTatman” Betar and Complexity Gaming are teaming up to host TimTheTatman’s Tailgate, described as a two-day celebration of the Tatman community that will take place on July 16-17 in Frisco, Texas. Activities include live musical performances, eating contests, yard games, a car show, and more.

Misfits Gaming announced the additions of two Minecraft streamers to their stable, in Tubbo and Ranboo. The company stated that the moves were designed as a first big step as an esports organization to invest in a non-competitive ecosystem.

Fnatic and Nielsen Sports teamed up for ‘The ROI of Esports,’ research that states how some of the world’s leading esports teams have more than doubled their ROI for their sponsors in the past two years. Among the findings was data that esports’ audience base is growing at between 10-20% per year and that 73% of Gen-Z and millennials report using some level of ad-blockers. Meanwhile, leading teams in the League of Legends European Championships had more than doubled their ROI for their sponsors from 2019 (2.1x) to the present day (4.5x), as a result of the maturing ecosystem, while the average Return on Media Investment (ROMI) for sponsoring Fnatic was higher (4.5x) than sponsoring some high-profile traditional sports events and teams. INDUSTRY Sony is adding video game developer Bungie under its umbrella in a deal valued at $3.6 billion. Ubisoft made a slate of assignments in its executive ranks for its new global esports and competitive gaming division. François-Xavier Deniele, has been named Sr. director of esports and competitive gaming with Nelson Garcia assuming the role of associate global director of esports, events and broadcasts. Marcio Soares becomes global director of esports, marketing and business while Emeline Berthon will be associate global director of esports and communications. In addition, Che Chou will now be responsible for three regions as senior director of esports for Latin America, North America and EMEA. Studios in Las Vegas, São Paulo and Paris will be leveraged for a “multi-year plan with competitive activities, tournaments, and leagues tailored to everyone, plus a clear path from amateur to professional play that inspires and engages players around the world.”
