02/17/22: ESL goes live for Dota 2 Major; Riot plots collegiate VALORANT; T1 hears Omen

With IEM Katowice on the horizon, ESL Gaming detailed plans to host the upcoming Dota 2 Major in ESL One Stockholm powered by Intel, running May 12-22, and marking the first major event for the title to welcome back live fans since early 2020. The Major features 18 of the world’s best Dota 2 teams from each Region’s Division I bracket with two to four slots available per region (China, Eastern Europe, North America, South America, Southeast Asia, and Western Europe). Teams will battle it out to take home their share of the $500,000 total prize pool, as well as to earn more DPC Points in order to qualify for The International 11.|
“It has been a long two years for Dota 2’s esports ecosystem, and we couldn’t be more excited to finally invite Dota 2 fans back on-site,” said Artem Bykov, General Manager, Game Management at ESL Gaming. “Organizing a Major is always special, but with so much at stake right now, ESL One Stockholm will simply be awesome. The Overwatch League detailed plans for its fifth season, which will get underway on May 5, and include multiple tournaments, including a midseason global tournament, and regional tournaments in the Kickoff Clash and the Summer Showdown. Overall, each team plays at least 24 regular-season games, up from last year’s relatively count of 16 games. The final tournament of the year, the Countdown Cup, serve as wild card play-ins for the postseason, giving two teams the chance to enter the bracket. Sean Miller, head of the Overwatch League, confirmed in a video that live events will be returning during the 2022 season.
Catching up on the collegiate front, Riot Games North America and the Riot Scholastic Association of America mapped out a vision to bring formal support to the collegiate VALORANT scene, working with colleges nationwide in bolster the ecosystem starting Fall 2022. With the announcement, the company stated that “The RSAA is committed to fostering the development of gaming as a meaningful and complementary part of the college experience. With a Board of Advisors of seasoned professionals in the Education sector, the RSAA prioritizes collaboration in navigating the unique challenges of growing the esports ecosystem, and we’re excited to be bringing this level of expertise to VALORANT.”
NASCAR and NACE Starleague are partnering up to offer college students nationwide to opportunity to compete in the newly-launched eNASCAR College iRacing Series, bringing competitive sim racing to more than 500 colleges and universities nationwide. The new series will be presented by NASCAR Official Partners Coca-Cola, Logitech, Playseat and Southern Computer Warehouse. “Gaming and Esports are an important component of NASCAR, allowing us to reach new fans who are often engaging with the sport for the first time,” said Nick Rend, Managing Director of Gaming and Esports, NASCAR. “Our various eNASCAR initiatives have seen exponential growth. We felt this was the right time to extend our reach to a younger audience and launch the eNASCAR College iRacing Series to show students the opportunities that sim racing and our sport hold for them.” The 2022 season opens on Thursday, February 24 with the Playfly Sports 30 race at Daytona International Speedway.
College sports’ biggest esports facility is on the fast track, with NC State elaborating on its infrastructure plans after securing $16 million from the state government to build an on-campus venue. The funding would also include a mobile arena. School officials reportedly stated that the arena would be the largest collegiate esports facility in the country. “We’ve been given $12 million to build a facility that can handle esports activities” Hoit said, per Technician. “Then another $4 million to build what they call the ‘mobile arena,’ which is essentially a truck that can go out to anywhere in the state and bring a competition or activities like that on a short-term basis,” said Marc Hoit, vice chancellor for information technology at the school. The funding is part of the greater effort to cultivate a large esports presence in North Carolina.
Back to the pros. Blizzard Entertainment delivered plans for the first Hearthstone: Battlegrounds esports event to run April 2-3. Titled Lobby Legends: Raid Leaders, competition will feature 16 Battlegrounds players from around the world battling for the title. The second Battlegrounds: Lobby Legends is tentatively scheduled for May. STREAMHATCHET Lost Ark, Amazon Game’s newest MMORPG, has been breaking records across the board since its release last week. In just 24 hours after the free release, it reached the number 2 spot on Steam’s top games by peak concurrent players with over 1.32 million players.
On the live streaming side, a similar story can be told. On the early release day of the Lost Ark paid content, peak live stream viewership across all platforms hit 1.34 million viewers. While viewership declined slightly after that first day, it picked back up over the weekend. Lost Ark viewership hit over a million concurrent viewers on Friday, the Steam release of the free game. That viewership remained high throughout the weekend, hitting just under a million peak concurrents the next day as well.
Lost Ark is Amazon Game’s second entry into the MMO market. Their first release, New World, came out in 2021 and also saw great success for both players and live stream viewers. Currently, it sits at #5 peak players on Steam, and on its first day of release it hit just over a million concurrent viewers across Twitch, YouTube Gaming, and Facebook Gaming. However, Lost Ark has outperformed New World in both player counts and live streaming viewership in its first week. Amazon Games is proving to be a worthy competitor in the MMORPG market.

Enthusiast Gaming Holdings announced the results of its latest custom study with Nielsen to measure the total social reach and Twitch viewership of the Company’s Luminosity Gaming esports audience. Results for January 2022 show that Luminosity Gaming’s total social following is now over 145M globally, having grown 13% since the last study in October 2021. In addition, the hours watched for Luminosity Gaming’s esports team on Twitch surpassed 32M globally in January, an increase of 34% since the last study. ROSTER MOVES
Riot’s LCS named Jackie Felling as the league’s new commissioner. Activision Blizzard will reportedly see head of esports Brandon Snow depart the company at the end of February, according to SBJ. Now oversaw the Call of Duty League and the Overwatch League since last summer. While Activision Blizzard searches for a replacement, Activision Blizzard chief administrative officer Brian Bulatao will handle the bulk of Snow’s role, while Sean Miller reportedly will head up Overwatch League management, and Daniel Tsay manages the Call of Duty League, according to the article.
