Amid dozens of high-caliber releases this year, Cyberpunk 2077 might be the most interesting case study yet. Yes, CD Projekt RED’s futuristic role-playing title was widely panned following its buggy, nigh-unplayable debut in late 2020. At the time, the game whiffed on a multitude of promises, and CDPR was well on its way into damage control from Day 1 all the way up through this week, when the fruits of those efforts – Cyberpunk’s 2.0 patch and, on Sept. 26, the game’s first expansion – will launch.

Cyberpunk 2077’s ground-up revamp is so substantial that CDPR recommends players start an entirely new playthrough in order to re-experience the title (or, in the case of many, get a fresh start on a game that left a sour taste). Days later, the Phantom Liberty expansion releases, and in the midst of a crowded game release slate and marquee release after marquee release, will try to make its mark.

The closest parallel to CDPR’s revival of cyberpunk is Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, the reshaped version of Square Enix’s massive multiplayer online role-playing game that became a stunning success after the original FFXIV crashed and burned post-release. Nowadays, FFXIV is a staple among MMORPG players and one of the most-played titles in the genre. The question is, can the re-imagining of a single-player title have a similar impact? Or has all the goodwill CDPR built up through its wildly popular Witcher series evaporated in the face of Cyberpunk’s initial flop?

VALORANT pro Melanie “meL” Capone confirmed she has been turned down by Tier 1 organizations because players on the team were uncomfortable playing with a woman. The Version1 VALORANT Game Changers player, who previously led one of the most dominant women’s teams in the esport’s history, confirmed the news in a statement following esports insider Rod “Slasher” Breslau revealing the situation. “I had a bad experience I did not feel like discussing out of fear that it would take away from future opportunities, but I will say this: I don’t believe that experience is in any way indicative of the kind of professional community we have here,” meL said in her statement. “Yes, sexism is apparent in esports. I would not be using my platform responsibly if I attempted to deny any bad faith actors or the stories of many other women who have shared their negative experiences in VALORANT and other esports.”

The best-selling fighting game series of all time got its latest installment last week, and Mortal Kombat 1 has seen solid reception from fans and critics thus far despite living in the shadow of Street Fighter 6. NetherRealm Studios launched its reset of the storied Mortal Kombat franchise on Sept. 14, and while the game is a step behind SF6 on Metacritic amongst both reviewers and the average user, it’s been largely praised for its mechanical prowess, graphics, and cast of longtime favorites and fresh faces.

Call of Duty’s World Series of Warzone event drew more than 375,000 peak viewers, making it the second-most-watched Warzone tournament ever, according to internal numbers from publisher Activision. The peak of 378,316 average minute audience for the battle royale title beat peak viewership for all Call of Duty League events this year. The event also brought a crowd of 3,000 to the Copper Box Arena in London on Saturday, with Team Biffle earning the title and lion’s share of the $500,000 prize pool.

Valve has discontinued its Dota 2 Pro Circuit in an effort to revitalize the game’s esports ecosystem and create more competitive opportunities with third party support. The decision, Valve said in a statement, is designed to remove some of the restrictions that organizers face when programming DPC affiliated events; the circuit will end after the 2023 campaign wraps up, with a wider range of competitions leading into qualification for The International, the game’s world championship, moving forward. “The world of competitive Dota has grown less exciting, less varied, and ultimately much less fun,” thanks to DPC regulations, Valve said in a statement. “By existing as the only official league, the DPC has a stranglehold on the event calendar for the year and what it’s filled with.”

In 2023, the number of unique channels that had Just Chatting as primary game on Twitch was 637K, which accounts for 32% of the over 1.9M channels that streamed Just Chatting at least once. Taking into consideration that so far in 2023 Twitch has nearly 3M unique channels, Just Chatting channels account for 27% of the total channels on Twitch.

Gamers on Social Media: Content Preferences

Gamers stand out when it comes to their content preferences on social media platforms. Comedy (47%), music (43%), and gaming (42%) rank as their top three favored genres. Naturally, gamers display a significant preference for gaming content, with 42% of them following this category, compared to the overall population’s 23%. But what sets gamers apart further is their heightened interest in genres like computers and technology (29% vs. 18%) and business (26% vs. 19%). They are nearly as likely as the general population to follow cooking and baking content (31% vs. 32%), making it the only category where their preference is marginally lower.

Shopify Rebellion has purchased TSM’s slot in the League of Legends Championship Series, the Canadian commerce company’s esports organization announced Wednesday. TSM had been looking to sell its LCS slot and explore fielding a team in another region, while Shopify has been expanding its esports programs; Shopify Rebellion fields teams in Dota 2, Halo, Rocket League, StarCraft, VALORANT and, entering 2024, League. “Entering League of Legends — one of the largest esports titles, with a rich competitive history — felt like an obvious next step for us as we continue to grow our presence in esports,” Shopify esports program development lead Dario “TLO” Wünsch said in a statement. “We’re excited to work with the former TSM roster and for them to compete in the LCS under the Shopify Rebellion banner.”

Karmine Corp is making a splash beyond its stadium, too: Esports.net reports the organization expects to join the League of Legends Europe/Middle East/Africa Championship in 2024. An official decision should be made in April of this year, but K-Corp would be a natural fit in the league both from a talent perspective and its ability to draw eyeballs for its competitions.

Natus Vincere has signed 14-year-old Dota 2 star Artem “Niku” Bachkur to its Academy team as Na’Vi aims to prepare the prodigy and its Dota 2 program for future title contention. Niku will have a few months to acclimate to a team setting before making his amateur debut as the Dota 2 season is wrapping up soon: The International 2024 begins this October in Seattle.

A massive blunder from Microsoft in its court proceedings with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission led to the leaking of release dates for upcoming hardware, major IP and internal communications that detail things such as Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer’s desire to acquire Nintendo. According to leaked documents, Microsoft plans to release a mid-generation that includes new Xbox Series X, S, and controller editions, and the company plans to launch its next console generation in 2028, with a focus on cloud technology. “We’ve seen the conversation around old emails and documents,” Spencer said in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “It is hard to see our team’s work shared in this way because so much has changed and there’s so much to be excited about right now, and in the future. We will share the real plans when we are ready.”

Unity’s backtracking on its Runtime Fee program continued this week with the game development software company apologizing for the “confusion and angst” their product update caused. Unity’s Runtime Fee would charge developers who earned more than $200,000 in lifetime revenue or 200,000 lifetime installs of their game a per-install fee of up to $0.20 per time a game is downloaded on a device. The company plans to further address concerns in the near future, it said in a statement, though it seems that even entirely canceling the Runtime Fee system would not repair the eroded trust Unity will deal with in the marketplace moving forward.

In some positive news for Microsoft, Starfield surpassed 10 million players on Tuesday, becoming the biggest launch title in Bethesda history. The title is a lofty one, with competitors like Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4 among past contenders. Starfield, which launched Sept. 5, additionally broke records among Bethesda properties with 6 million players just 27 hours after its debut on Xbox and PC.
